CANADA'S ARCTIC
ARCTIC EXPLORER
CRUISES TO CANADA'S ARCTIC WITH CRUISE NORTH
11 nights
Departure on 2 July 2008
Cruise Ship Ships which operate this route: Lyubov Orlova - 122 guests
As with all our expeditions, weather, ice, tides and other conditions will dictate our itinerary and shore excursions.  Unusually strong tides and currents combined with drifting sea ice means our route and landing sites will vary from one expedition to the next.  The earlier in the season the departure, the more sea ice we will encounter.  This increases the chance of seeing marine mammals at home on the ice, even though it may slow our progress on some days.  Wildlife sightings and some activities depend on favourable conditions.
Itinerary
Day 1 Fly UK to Montreal for one night
Day 2 Fly to Kuujjuaq where you will have a brief tour and lunch before boarding the ship.

Cruise North Arctic Explorer itinerary mapExplore the Arctic looking for wildlife - walrus and polar bears, watching birds, visiting small communities, exploring archaeological sites, watching cultural performances, learn about Inuit Art.

The places you may visit are:

Akpatok Island
An uninhabited island of soaring bird cliffs and small rocky beaches. Here we’ll use our zodiacs to scout the beaches in search of walrus and polar bears.
Kangiqsujuaq
Passing through a deep fiord with steep rocky walls, we anchor in Wakeham Bay. We feast on locally harvested foods, and enjoy an amazing performance of traditional Inuit throat singing and drum dancing.
Digges Island & Mansel Island
At Digges Island, we visit the spot where Henry Hudson first encountered native Inuit. We cruise along the cliff face and visit Mansel Island, a favourite place for walrus and polar bear.
Walrus Island
This small, rocky outcrop in the northern reaches of Hudson Bay is a favourite haul-out for hundreds of walrus. We zodiac the shores and marvel at the size and number of these massive creatures with their gleaming ivory tusks, so awkward on land but incredibly agile in the water.
Cape Dorset & Mallikjuak Territorial Park
Cape Dorset is widely known as the Inuit art capital of the world. We’ll take time to enjoy the artists’ creations – scrimshaw, fine soapstone carvings, stonecut printing, lithographic printmaking, etching and sculpting. At nearby Mallikjuaq Island we explore archaeological sites dating back three millennia.
Kimmirut for Katannilik Territorial Park (Soper Heritage River)
We hike along the shores of Soper Lake and picnic beside the emerald-green waters of Soper River. We’ll visit the community of Kimmirut for demonstrations of soapstone carving and stencil print making.
Inukjuaq
This Hudson Bay community has a wonderful Inuit cultural artefact museum, surrounded by expansive plateaus with breathtaking views of lakes and rivers. We hike across the tundra, keeping watch for wildlife and important archaeological sites.
Day 9 Churchill
The waters of the Churchill River are a summer home for Beluga whales.  Watch for them on deck as we sale up the river before disembarking, fly to Montreal for your final night.
Day 10 At leisure before flying to the UK.

Note: The itineraries and shore excursions are governed by weather, ice, tides and other conditions.
