If you think holidays in Alaska have become a little too mainstream, then we invite you to think outside the box and take a look at the most unique self drive route in the country.  Spend three days exploring the highways in one of the most ‘off the beaten track’ locations anywhere in the world.

Positioned on the Seward Peninsula and without any direct highway access, Nome is accessible by air from Anchorage.  Here on the shores of the Bering Sea you can experience an Alaska that other visitors can only dream about.  These sub-Arctic routes are remote, appealing and offer visitors a rewarding experience.  Nome is the hub of the Peninsula and the tour is structured to utilise one hotel as a base for all nights.  Each highway can be explored in a day while still leaving time for occasional hiking and sightseeing.  Without darkness in the summer months you can accomplish a lot of exploring in a day!
Itinerary
Day 1 Fly from London to Anchorage.  Overnight in Anchorage.
Day 2 This morning you will fly to Nome and collect your hire vehicle to start the tour.  Today we suggest driving north to Teller, through the sub arctic country and the Kigluaik Mountains.  Teller is a fascinating traditional village where native handicrafts may be purchased from the local people.  Overnight in Nome.
Day 3 Today enjoy driving the Nome-Council Highway which follows the coastline of the Bering Sea, here the Russian coast is just across the Bering Strait.  The highway ends at the Niukluk River, near the tiny settlement of Council.  Overnight in Nome.
Day 4  Summer in these latitudes brings around the clock daylight; drive day or night in sunlight! Travelling the Nome - Taylor Highway takes you north through Kigluaik Mountains to Kougarok.  Plan to visit Salmon Lake or Pilgrim Hot Springs for a picnic en route.  The raw beauty of the sub arctic landscapes has to be seen.  
Day 5 Spend the morning touring the city and exploring the nearby goldfields.  Drop off your rental car.  Take an early afternoon flight back to Anchorage.  Overnight in Anchorage.
Day 6 Anchorage at leisure before flying back to London.
Day 7 Arrive London.
