EMPEROR PENGUIN SAFARI
SNOW HILL ISLAND SAFARI |
 13 nights
Departures in October
& November 2008
Ship: Kapitan Khlebnikov (Icebreaker) |
 |
| In 2004, carrying on a legacy of polar firsts, Quark Expeditions confirmed the existence of
4,000 pairs of Emperor Penguins at a previously unidentified site near Snow Hill Island - and
we continue to be the only company visiting this remote rookery at this time of year.
Our ‘safari’ is a rare opportunity for photographers, artists, and nature lovers to
observe Emperors early in the breeding season and to take the time you need to appreciate
these extraordinary creatures. |

John Weller: Author, Photographer, Conservationist
In 2008, author and photographer John Weller will be our special guest on all three
Emperor Penguin safaris. John will act as photographer-in-residence during the first
departure, delivering interactive photographic workshops to prepare adventurers for the
extraordinary photo opportunities we anticipate at the rookery. During the second and
third expedition, John will be leading a team with the intent of filming the Emperors in their
underwater habitat. A submersible will be carried aboard the icebreaker to the Weddell
Sea where it will be deployed for up to 14 hours each evening while the ship is parked near
the rookery. John and his team plan to share some of their underwater footage with
guests during the homeward journeys. |

| Itinerary 2008 |
| Day 1 - Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina |
| |
Ushuaia is a picturesque community with excellent restaurants and
intriguing museums. You’ll spend the night at our host hotel, so you’ll have
time to explore. |
| Day 2 - Embarkation Day |
| |
After boarding in the afternoon, we’ll follow the Beagle Channel into
the open waters of the Drake Passage. |
| Days 3 & 4 – Crossing the Drake Passage |
| |
Emperor Penguins will be on your mind while you cross the Drake
Passage. By the time you reach the Weddell Sea, you’ll be a well-rounded
expert on birds of all kinds. In addition to the biology, habitat and
behaviour of Emperors, our ornithologist will make presentations on the pelagic birds that
accompany the ship. Our photographer-in-residence will prepare you for the
special lighting conditions you will encounter during your visit to the rookery. |
| Days 5 to 7 – The aristocrats of the Antarctic |
| |
Reaching the Snow Hill rookery under the best possible conditions is
the goal of the expedition. The Captain and Expedition Leader consult charts,
weather bulletins and satellite images to determine where to park the icebreaker for
efficient helicopter flights to the rookery.
In 2007, visitors to the rookery saw Emperor chicks, many sitting on the feet of the
adult caring for them. We hope to repeat that unique opportunity in 2008.
Helicopters will be used to ferry adventurers to a landing site about 2 km (1.2 miles)
or more from the rookery. You’ll walk a well marked path through a sculpture
garden of towering ice. Adult Emperors tobogganing to the sea to feed have the
right of way! |
| Days 8 to 11 – Discovering the White Continent |
|
While the Emperors are our priority, we also plan to visit the
Antarctic Peninsula. Our exact route will be determined by local
conditions.
We plan to sail Iceberg Alley. Use your newly acquired photographic skills to
snap pictures of massive tabular icebergs until your camera beeps a warning that the
memory is full. While passing through Antarctic Sound, you will see more
fantastic ice sculptures from pure white to deep blue. A soulful silence may
engulf you, unless a glacier calves or an iceberg over turns – then suddenly,
everything is noise and waves.
While visiting the Peninsula, we hope to explore penguin rookeries under construction.
Adélie, Chinstrap, and Gentoo Penguins court, lay eggs, and raise their young
during the austral summer. Your voyage takes place at a time when these smaller
penguins are selecting nesting sites and choosing partners.
You’ll be hungry after each day’s activities – but only for a moment. The
Hospitality Team prides itself on satisfying your hunger as well as the Expedition
Team satisfies your craving for adventure. |
| Days 12 to 14 – Recollection and reflection |
|
On the return to Ushuaia, you’ll be recalling the details of the
voyage. These memories will stay with you, as clear and powerful as the day they
were formed. The existence of the Emperor Penguin is more than a story of survival and
endurance. It is the triumph of life itself. |

| Embracing the Unexpected |
Quark Expeditions takes you to remote polar regions where very few travellers
venture.
We constantly adjust our routes in progress to take best advantage of weather and ice
conditions - which can vary unpredictably from day to day. In some cases our exact
landings depend on official permission that can only be obtained locally. And we are
always ready to alter plans accordingly to take advantage of wildlife sightings and other
one-of-a-kind opportunities. All this to say that our itineraries are painstakingly
planned but are not definitive summaries of the journey you will actually experience. We
cannot guarantee that all shore landings will take place or that they will include all the
events we’ve outlined in advance. Embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy - and
excitement - of expedition-style travel, and a measure of flexibility is something all of us
must bring along on the voyage.
Wind chill will keep the temperature down on the ice of the rookery. When you book you
will receive a list of additional gear that you should acquire to keep you warm and
comfortable while visiting the Emperor Penguins. |
