CANADA - QUEBEC

QUEBEC & GASPÉ PENINSULA FLY DRIVE
WHALES, WOLVES, CARIBOU, MOOSE, GANNETS AND HAUTE CUISINE
13 nights
Departures from June to October
Eastern Quebec offers a unique cultural and wildlife experience.  A French way of life greets you in the streets of Old Quebec’s walled city.  The Saguenay has whales swimming in deep fjords.  Caribou and moose graze on Gaspé’s majestic Appalachian mountains.  “Land’s End” at the tip of the peninsula offers spectacular coastal scenery, colonies of nesting sea-birds, fossils and whales, once again.
Itinerary
Day 1  On arrival in Quebec City collect your car and transfer to your hotel for 2 nights.  The city of Quebec is the only enclosed city in North America, constructed on Cape Diamant, a massive headland dominating the majestic waters of the St. Lawrence River.
Day 2  Spend the day exploring the city.
Day 3  Depart Quebec City heading for Tadoussac.  This scenic drive will take you through the Laurentian Mountains beside the St. Lawrence River, stopping along the way to take in the waterfalls and parks.  Accommodation is at the Hotel Tadoussac for 3 nights.
Days 4 & 5 Spend these days whale watching in the Saguenay Fjord area where the St. Lawrence and the Saguenay River meet.  The area is a rich and dynamic marine ecosystem which attracts many species of birds and animals.  You may also have the opportunity to join a wolf watching programme.  Should you choose to travel here in late September there is a hawk migration observatory platform in the area from which you can observe hundreds of red-tailed, broad-winged and sharp-shinned hawks.
Day 6  Drive to the village of Saint Simeon and take the ferry across the St. Lawrence, then drive on to Revière-du-Loup.  Stay at the Auberge de la Pointe.  Look out for beluga whales during the crossing.
Day 7  Drive to Parc de la Gaspésie and stay at the Gîte du Mont-Albert which is situated in the park.  Stop along the way at Parc du Bic which is located in the transition zone between the deciduous and boreal forest.
Days 8 & 9 Stay and explore the Parc de la Gaspésie.  Gîte du Mont-Albert is in the heart of the famed Appalachian Mountains which are reputed to have the densest population of moose in the world.  It also has the most southern herd of caribou in North America.  Visitors rarely miss seeing both caribou and moose.
Day 10  Drive to Percé along one of the most scenic and spectacular roads in North America where the huge cliffs plunge into the St. Lawrence.  You may wish to stop at Forillion National Park. Finback, minke and humpback whales abound in this part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence from June through to October. Stay at L’Auberge à Percé for 2 nights.
Day 11  Spend the day exploring the area and islands around Percé. Bonaventure Island is the home to the second largest gannet colony in the world (up to 60 thousand) and is easily accessed by a 20 minute boat ride from the mainland.  Percé Rock is 1,500 feet long, and you can walk to the base of the rock at low tide.
Day 12  Leaving Percé in a southerly direction, you will drive around and through the Peninsula to Le Bic.  This lovely journey takes you through villages which dot the shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the sheltered waters of the Baie des Chaleurs.  Accommodation is at the Auberge du Mange Grenouille.
Day 13  Return to Quebec City via the south side of the St. Lawrence River. Overnight at the Clarendon Hotel.
Day 14  Return your rental car.
