Wilderness Yurt Camp in Whitehorse

Located 30 minutes northwest of Whitehorse at a wilderness base camp, you can enjoy the simplistic beauty of yurts; circular mountain huts with beautiful interior fir latticework and large circular skylights. Guests eat and socialise in the large main yurt and sleep in smaller private yurts where accommodation is rustic yet elegant. Activities include cross-country skiing and snow shoeing.

Holiday idea

Day 1

You will be met in Whitehorse on arrival. Enjoy a town tour which includes visiting the SS Klondike, a restored Klondike paddle wheeler, and the MacBride Museum, an excellent display depicting all elements of Yukon culture, heritage and history. Stop off at the local micro-brewery to pick up some ale, we then drive 25 minutes to the “the Homestead” which is the home base for the adventure trips consists of the main log cabin, complete with a sundeck and six-person hot tub, showers, two guest bedrooms, loft library and full cooking and dining facilities.  After getting outfitted in dog sledding equipment and gear, you enjoy a 2 hour dogsledding demonstration including a training run on an all terrain vehicle (ATV). Dinner is a barbeque which is followed by a lecture and video about the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), and snacks and hot drinks are enjoyed later that evening during our aurora viewing. Tonight you will sleep in log cabins or yurts with cozy duvets and stoves.

Day 2

After breakfast you will have an ATV driving lesson, then drive 3 hours to the Wilderness Yurt Basecamp, stopping along the way to fish for arctic grayling and/or enjoy some time for photography and interpretive sessions about the flora and fauna of the Ibex Valley Region. (All spin and fly fishing gear is supplied). The Wilderness Basecamp of Mongolian yurts is located on the pristine Ibex River. Dinner will be cooked on the woodstove and served with wine, and then, after a well deserved sauna and shower, enjoy fireside drinks while gain your first experience aurora viewing. The Ibex River Valley is a fantastic place to watch the Aurora Borealis and you can lay out on the valley floor dressed in parkas on top of sleeping mats, while watching the breathtaking show of the Northern Lights. Tonight you will sleep in a yurt, with a five foot glass dome overhead so you can watch the Aurora Borealis from the privacy of your own bed.

Day 3

Today you will pack a lunch and go on a true Yukon hike for as long and as high as you desire. Some guests may prefer to stay around the camp, relaxing and reading their favourite book while enjoying appetizers outside around the fire or in the main yurt by the woodstove. They may also decide to try to catch some of the fine Arctic Grayling found in the “Home Pool” directly in front of the main yurt. You will return in time for a sauna and shower, another fabulous meal and a fine glass of wine and more Northern Lights.

Day 4

After brunch, depart for another short nature walk, this time following the river looking for the river otters that live here. Eventually you make your way back to the Basecamp and pack your gear for the drive back to the Homestead. Following a late lunch, guests are driven back into Whitehorse to their hotel or to the airport to begin their journey home.
