Discover the landscapes, stories and western spirit of Saskatchewan on this 11-day self-drive adventure. Begin in Saskatoon, where engaging museums, contemporary art and Indigenous heritage introduce you to the province’s diverse culture and history. Spend a full day at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, exploring Northern Plains Indigenous traditions, archaeological sites, walking trails and the park’s resident bison herd.

The heart of the journey is a five-night stay at Heritage Outfitting, a fifth-generation working ranch near Grasslands National Park. Here, you can swap everyday life for wide-open prairie, welcoming western hospitality and time in the saddle. Ranch activities may include sorting and moving cattle on horseback, checking herds, grooming and saddling horses, and learning practical horsemanship skills. Evenings bring unforgettable prairie experiences, including a sunset ride along the Continental Divide and the option to spend a night beneath Saskatchewan’s immense, star-filled skies.

Continue to Moose Jaw to uncover the colourful stories hidden beneath its streets. Character-led tunnel tours bring the city’s past to life, from prohibition-era bootlegging and its reputed connections with Al Capone to the experiences of early Chinese immigrants. From here, travel to Regina for your return flight, with the option to extend your stay in Saskatoon, Moose Jaw or Regina.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrival

Fly from the UK to Saskatoon via Toronto.

On arrival make your way downtown to your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure in Saskatoon.

Stay for three nights in Saskatoon

Day 2 | Full day to explore Saskatoon

Visit the Western Development Museum - Located on Treaty 4 and Treaty 6 territories and the Homeland of the Métis, the Western Development Museum (WDM) is the largest human history museum in Saskatchewan. With a collection of over 75,000 artifacts ranging from pins to locomotives and four locations in the province, the WDM shares the Saskatchewan story from the beginning of settlement to present day.

The Ukrainian Museum of Canada in downtown Saskatoon, SK, features three galleries dedicated to celebrating and promoting the arts, culture, and legacy of the Ukrainian Canadian community. It also houses archives, a library, community spaces, and a shop carrying a range of authentic Ukrainian giftware, clothing, and crafts.

Remai Modern is a direction-setting art museum and gathering place for culture and community. The building includes 11 gallery spaces, a 150-seat theatre, restaurant, outdoor terraces and rooms with stunning views of the South Saskatchewan River.

Day 3 | Spend the day at Waneskewin

Pick up your hire car from downtown Saskatoon in the morning.

Wanuskewin is a living reminder of the people’s sacred relationship with the land and works to advance the understanding and appreciation of the evolving cultures of Northern Plains Indigenous peoples. (It is a fascinating place and is open from 0930-1700.  Visit to learn more about Northern Plains Indigenous cultures, histories, and stories. Your admission covers access to the Visitor Centre’s exhibit hall and art galleries, a nearly 7km trail network, playground, and Bison Viewing Platform. The on-site Restaurant and Gift Shop are open daily. 

You can join public programming free with your admission, as well as a public Weekend Dance / Music Presentation at 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Day 4 | Drive to Heritage Outfitting in the morning – approx. 4 hours

There will be a horse-riding activity in the afternoon – accommodation is in comfortable but rustic cabins with adjoining toilets and showers.

The next four days will include ranch activities such as sorting cattle and moving cattle on horseback and other activities. There is also a sunset ride on the Continental Divis and if you are interested a Sun and stars overnight adventure.

Stay for 5 nights.

Days 5–8 | Heritage Outfitting.

Enjoy western hospitality and gain an understanding of ranch operations and how western ranch life has adapted over the years.

Story telling and touring of the advanced ecosystem is woven throughout the time spent at the ranch, showcasing the plants and wildlife of the mixed grass prairie, the landscape’s evidence of early homesteaders and Indigenous history.

Throughout the summer, guest experiences can be booked for horse training experience, authentic ranch work such as cattle herd checking, treating sick or injured cattle, ranch maintenance and knowledge sharing in stewarding the land.

In the fall, guests can book time to engage in cowboy work that needs to be done before winter such as evaluating the herd, treating and sorting pasture cattle, herding and moving cattle, and processing purebred calves including tattooing, freeze branding and immunizations, pregnancy checking cows, sorting cull cows, and choosing replacement heifers for the herd.

In early spring, guest experiences can be booked throughout calving season for a variety of days and also scheduled for preparing bulls to sell. This work involves helping our veterinarian, clipping and grooming for the sale catalogue and videos for online marketing. Daily chores in the spring involve feeding cattle and sorting cow/calf pairs as they are born.

Horse riding lessons are available for those eager to further their horsemanship skills or become wranglers and safe, proper cattle handling for all cowboys and cowgirls involved. We train horses and provide many opportunities for horse training enthusiasts to watch and learn some new skills hands-on.

Guests are included as well in the work required in preparation for each job, using a safe, hands-on approach in tasks such as: fencing, corral repair, tack cleaning and repair, and ranch equipment maintenance as well as cooking a large crew meal. Upon booking, guests will be familiarized with tasks required, dependent on the time of year, and indicate their most favourable.

Day 9 | Drive to Moose Jaw – approx. 3 hours

On arrival, settle into your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure.

Follow character guides through prohibition and bootlegging in the 1920s, the Propaganda and intrigue of the Cold War, and the Chinese triumph over discriminatory legislation of the 1900s

Stay for 2 nights in Moose Jaw.

Day 10 | Explore some of the tunnels

The Chicago Connection tells the story of prohibition and Al Capone’s connection to Moose Jaw in the 2130’s.  Follow this guided tour under the streets where you learn the ropes of becoming a bootleg. Smuggling can be dangerous but with the help of Capone’s gang you navigate underground tunnels to sidestep the laws and transport the precious cargo.

Day 11 | Drive to Regina - approx. 50 minutes

Return your hire car at the airport in time for your flight back to the UK. 

Note – if you wish to spend extra nights in Saskatoon or Moose Jaw or a couple of nights in Regina – we can arrange this.
